Practice Case Study: Asset Prioritization

Situation: Your client is a small biotech in the oncology space. They have no commercial products, but three separate assets in Phase I development. At present, they only have enough funding to bring one further into clinical trials and have asked for your help in determining which asset would be the best.

Potential Responses:
– Market size of each indication
– Competitive landscape (e.g., How many competitors are there in each indication (both marketed and pipeline)?)
– Partnership opportunities (e.g., Is there an opportunity to partner with a marketed product for a combination approach?)
– Standard of care (e.g., What is the current treatment of choice for oncologists?)
– Unmet needs (e.g., How can our therapies better address remaining issues for patients?)
– Product characteristics (What do we know about our data for safety and efficacy? How does our mechanism of action compare to others in the market and pipeline?)
– Line of therapy and other disease segmentation (e.g., Which line of therapy in the progression of disease would we be treating?)
– Physician perceptions (e.g., How will the oncologists perceive these drugs?)
– Regulatory path (e.g., Is it clear that our client will receive approval? Is there an accelerated path to approval?)

>NSCLC >HNSCC
>US Population >~300 M >~300 M
>Incidence Rate (US) >0.08% (240,000) >0.02% (60,000)
>Diagnosis Rate >80% (192,000) >60% (36,000)
>Treatment Rate >95% (182,400) >90% (32,400)
>Product Uptake >5% (9,120) >40% (12,960)
>Cost of Treatment >$150 K >$150 K
>Peak Revenue >$1.4B >$1.9B
Potential Responses for HNSCC:
  • The peak annual revenue for HNSCC is larger than NSCLC
  • HNSCC has more unmet need in their market than NSCLC
  • NSCLC has many more competitors vs. HNSCC
  • [If novel MoA] In HNSCC, we could be first to market for our MoA
  • [If novel MoA] Our data is more differentiated in HNSCC vs. the SoC than NSCLC
  • [If novel MoA] There is room to move into earlier lines of therapy in HNSCC
Potential Responses for NSCLC:
  • NSCLC patient population is expected to grow faster than HNSCC
  • There are more opportunities to partner with other drugs in NSCLC
  • There is a larger patient population in NSCLC – if there are opportunities to boost share, this could make sense
Potential Responses for either disease:
  • In (HNSCC) / (NSCLC) we could be first to market for our MoA
  • Our data is more differentiated in (HNSCC) / (NSCLC) vs. the SoC
  • There is room to move into earlier lines of therapy in (HNSCC) / (NSCLC)
