Pharma Vision 2030: Capability

Charting the course to 2030: Strategic approaches to achieving capability success

In our previous Pharma Vision 2030 articles, we’ve addressed the transformative shifts reshaping the pharmaceutical industry, where technology, data, and innovation are converging to create new possibilities in healthcare. But what does this mean for capability development? And how can pharma leaders leverage these developments to navigate the industry’s growing complexities? As we draw closer to 2030, the true challenge is moving beyond reactive change to actively shaping the capabilities that will drive success in an increasingly competitive healthcare landscape.

On a regular basis, we are hearing from leaders in pharmaceutical organizations of all sizes facing significant challenges: anticipating, investing in, and integrating the right capabilities to not only survive but thrive. This is no surprise; capability development is key to leadership success, providing the resilience and adaptability necessary to navigate the next five years.

This article explores how we at Prescient believe pharma leaders should approach capability development, blending foresight and innovation to create a ‘fit-for-future’ program that ensures sustained success amid uncertainty.

The need for agile, future-focused capabilities

Disruptive transformations in pharma are accelerating, with innovations like Generative AI already reshaping drug discovery, diagnostics, and more. This is putting immense pressure on teams to adapt quickly. With evolving customer expectations and shifting workforce roles, many companies are struggling to find and nurture talent, and 22% of UK CEOs believe their business models won’t survive the decade.

Building future-ready skills and empowering talent are essential to staying competitive. The World Economic Forum tells us that people are the centerpiece of the fourth industrial revolution, and continuous learning will be fundamental to staying relevant; therefore, pharma leaders must address pivotal questions to guide their organizations forward, such as: How can we become truly patient-centric? How can we leverage AI and data to unlock real-time insights? How do we innovate and differentiate in an increasingly complex market?

Four critical focus areas for success

We believe the priority lies in focusing on four core areas for success by 2030: strategic skills, customer engagement skills, tech-enabled skills, and human ‘soft’ skills. Let’s delve into each of these in the context of pharma:

1 – Becoming patient-centric: empathy and strategy at the core
Delivering true value requires more than just offering products or services. It demands a clear strategic goal and a deep understanding of the patient journey. Through ethnographic research, the leaders of tomorrow will be able to uncover insights into patient needs and identify critical opportunities for intervention. If you are armed with this knowledge, your organization has a better chance of developing behavior change strategies that address diverse patient concerns.

Of course, strategic skills are also necessary to make informed decisions about where and how to provide value while staying aligned with patients’ evolving expectations. In the era of personalized care, patient-centricity is no longer a ‘nice-to-have’ – it’s a must-have, so ensuring these skills are sharpened will be key.

2 – Leveraging data and tech for real-time insights

It can feel as though we are simultaneously blessed and cursed, because the pharma landscape is awash with data, but unlocking its potential is complex. Your team must be capable of navigating the noise to make informed, data-driven decisions. Over the next few years, tech-enabled skills, particularly in AI, will be absolutely crucial to competitiveness – identifying patterns and extracting real-time insights for smarter decision making.

Leaders have to remember that the goal is to go beyond data collection and move to data mastery, so that as the market evolves ever more rapidly, nimbleness and agility will be native capabilities.

3 – Innovating and disrupting to drive differentiation
We know innovation is crucial to achieving success in pharma, but again, the focus is on proactivity: pursue value-adding partnerships, both internally and externally, to accelerate results.

Customer engagement skills are vital here, as the definition of value will vary depending on the perspectives of regulators, payers, patients, and providers. Pharma companies must collaborate with healthcare systems, co-create solutions, and push the industry forward.

Technology is important, but do not forget that human ‘soft’ skills, like communication, collaboration, and leadership, will be pivotal in ensuring these partnerships remain strong, driving innovation, and fostering an environment where new ideas can flourish. Prioritization and efficiency will be integral to staying competitive in a dynamic market.

4 – Collaborating, adapting, and leading through change
If one thing is going to be a constant in the next five years, it’s that nothing will remain a constant. Across all areas, openness to change and collaboration between high-performing teams are going to be indispensable.

To foster better synergies within your organization and unlock internal knowledge and resources, capability development on additional soft skills, such as emotional intelligence, empathy, and adaptability, will add incredible value in the short, medium, and long term.

Try adopting a ‘fail-fast’ mindset, supported by piloting and experimentation, to support learning and quick adaptation. Agile approaches to customer needs and market shifts will aid responsiveness, and regular reviews centered on aligned KPIs will ensure strategies remain relevant and applicable.

Let’s build future capabilities. Together.

Successful pharma leaders of tomorrow must implement a structured, data-driven approach to capability development today.

Leveraging personalized learning and cutting-edge technology will enable the creation of scalable development programs. Tools like microlearning, gamification, and real-time progress tracking can boost engagement, encourage continuous improvement, and ensure employees are equipped with the skills needed to succeed in the future.
